More praise for My Men by Victoria Kielland

January 9 2023

The way in which the historical figure and her demonic, inner world are portrayed in a balanced way is impressive. The gruesome facts remain in the background, the reader only catches glimpses of the murders. Kielland makes Belle a tragic figure rather than a cruel one. The narrator’s voice in ‘My Men’ bears witness to a terrible loneliness.

The exceptionally expressive and sensory writing style makes ‘My Men’ compelling reading. The image-rich precision in Kielland’s sentences is breathtaking. What is brewing under the skin, she suggests in a concentrated and efficient way. She digs so deep into Belle’s psyche that you sometimes forget what the degenerate main character is capable of.
