Liv is 20 years old and lives in a two-room apartment with her one-year-old son. She steps outside for a moment to take out the trash and the door slams shut behind her – and her baby is left alone in the locked apartment. The young mother is helpless, confused, and unable to solve the problem of the closed door. Thoughts of her child – the baby screaming, sleeping, alone in his crib— whirl through her mind, and during these nightmarish events, we also see the story of her past unfold.
Closed Guitar is Jon Fosse’s second novel, first published in 1985 and later adapted for the theatre. It is widely considered one of his best early works.
